2012 is the Year of the Brothers Grimm: 200 years ago their fairy tales were first published. The topic of fairy tales fascinates young and old, and has its firm place in the language classroom. Therefore we Europeans decided on using the Grimm year as a reason to stage the first European Language Festival in Victoria – and where else but in the Fairy Park in Anakie?
The multilingual program includes puppet show, magician, short student performances of fairy tales, the language trail in each of the participating languages – including Dutch! – prizes for the best fairy tale costume (yes, students may come dressed up as fairy tale characters) and much more.

While the other languages involved, French, Spanish and Italian, are hosting the Festival for their languages during the week, it was decided that the Dutch festival will be on Sunday 20 May, so that it is possible for all families in the community to attend.

Cost: $ 6.00 per student $ 13 for adults

More information on the course of the day and on how to register will follow soon!

On 22 January the Belgian and Dutch communities celebrated The Grand Connection. Young and old joined to share their stories and really get to know each other for who they really are. There were folk games like sjoelen, zaklopen and spijkerpoepen and even some trivia. The people who attended had a great time and are looking forward to the next Grand Connection.

The proceeds of the day went to two good causes that participants could vote for. Part of this donation went to the Association of Dutch Teachers of Victoria and we couldn’t be happier!

Thank you to the Grand Connection Team and thank you to everyone who voted for us! The money will be well spent on promoting the Dutch language and saving the Dutch VCE exam.

Last weekend Merel Keijzer, who spent two months in Australia doing research on the effect of aging on bilingual Dutch-Australian migrants in Melbourne, gave a lecture at the Dutch Australian Heritage Centre (behind Dutch Club Abel Tasman) in Carnegie. Some 25 interested members of the community braved the heat to find out about Merel’s research. Merel explained the scope of her research and her predictions about the findings. Afterwards there was time for questions and everyone could ask about anything they’d always wanted to know about bilingualism. Many shared their stories about what it was like when they first came to Australia and how they were told to integrate as soon as possible and leave the Dutch language behind. It was clear that newer migrants experience their journey in a very different way, which explains why there seems to be an increase in Dutch migrant children being raised bilingually.

The ADTV is proud to have supported Merel in her project and is looking forward to hearing more about the results in the next year.

Ik laat me in ieder geval graag verrassen.
